Most Marijuana Consumers Will Decide Who To Vote For In Next Month’s Elections Based On Candidates’ Cannabis Stances, Poll Shows

Most people who consume marijuana say that they will be taking candidates’ stances on cannabis policy into account when deciding who to vote for in the November elections.

The new survey, conducted by the cannabis telehealth platform NuggMD on behalf of NORML, found that nearly eight in 10 marijuana consumers say their decision at the ballot box will be “significantly” or “somewhat” influenced by candidates’ views on cannabis policy.

“Reforming America’s failed marijuana prohibition laws enjoys bipartisan support among voters,” NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said. “Candidates and elected officials who ignore this reality do so at their own political peril.”

The advocacy group reported that 83 percent of Democrats and 73 percent of Republicans said candidates’ marijuana policy stances will influence while they vote.

Meanwhile, 81 percent of women and 76 percent of men said the same.

The poll involved interviews with 654 cannabis consumers who live in states with legal markets and has a margin of error of +/-3.83 percentage points.

A separate NuggMD poll that was released this week and conducted in partnership with Marijuana Moment found that cannabis consumers’ support for the Trump administration’s actions on marijuana continues to decline as completion of a federal rescheduling proposal remains stalled amid procedural delays in an ongoing hearing on the reform.

The latest quarterly presidential approval tracking poll shows that 29 percent of marijuana consumers now either “approve” or “strongly approve” of President Donald Trump’s cannabis actions.

Cannabis consumers’ approval of the administration’s work on marijuana is down from 48 percent last quarter and 73 percent in the quarter before that.

The most recent survey shows that 20 percent of respondents either “disapprove” or “strongly disapprove” of Trump’s cannabis accomplishments, while a majority—51 percent—now say they are neutral or have no opinion.
