The Drug Enforcement Administration is being sued by a researcher who wants the agency to halt its upcoming marijuana rescheduling hearing until several alleged procedural violations can be addressed.

A Bernalillo County, New Mexico commissioner announced plans to introduce a local measure to treat off-duty marijuana use by government employees more like alcohol use by removing the risk that a positive drug test for THC alone would lead to discipline or termination.

A new study shows how marijuana is a substitute for other drugs, finding that “significant proportions reported cannabis use led to ‘less’ alcohol (60%), synthetic cannabinoid (60%), morphine (44%) and methamphetamine (40%) use.”

  • “Cannabis may provide a lower risk option than heavy alcohol use among young adults who are in a particularly hedonistic phase of their lives.”

An Ohio Republican senator filed a new bill to ban the sale of intoxicating hemp products.

This month’s election results suggest that the marijuana legalization movement may face a “red wall” blocking further success in conservative states that still criminalize cannabis consumers.

President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, previously worked for Ballard Partners, a lobbying firm that represents cannabis company Trulieve.

The Department of Justice filed a brief urging the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit to uphold a ruling preventing the opening of a safe consumption site for illegal drugs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

California’s attorney general issued a consumer alert about intoxicating hemp products.

The Massachusetts legislature’s Joint Committee on Cannabis Policy will hold a hearing on Wednesday.

Maine regulators issued a recall of marijuana products with unsafe levels of yeast and mold.

Illinois regulators are being sued over alleged discrimination in medical cannabis cultivation business licensing.

New York regulators are accepting public comments on changes to marijuana business distance rules.

Vermont regulators cleared a backlog of marijuana cultivation business license applications.

Michigan regulators are being accused of making “defamatory and one-sided” accusations about alleged violations by a marijuana business.

Georgia regulators will consider medical cannabis production business license renewals on Wednesday.

Maryland regulators will host a town hall about allocating marijuana revenue on Thursday.

Voters in Colorado Springs, Colorado at first appeared to approve two contradictory marijuana ballot measures—one to ban recreational sales and another to allow medical cannabis dispensaries to begin selling to all adults—but updated election results show the ban proposal failing.

Denver, Colorado officials are accepting applications for a cannabis social equity technical assistance program.

The UK Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs is calling for an increase in allowable THC levels in hemp.

Philippine lawmakers are daring former President Rodrigo Duterteo to attend an upcoming hearing on the nation’s bloody “war on drugs.”

/ SCIENCE & HEALTH

A review concluded that “cannabinoids’ antibacterial potency is closely linked to their structure–activity relationships, with features like the monoterpene region, aromatic alkyl side chain, and aromatic carboxylic groups enhancing efficacy, particularly in CBD and its cyclic forms.”

A study found that “a notable and significant decrease in symptoms related to depression and anxiety at the time of cancer diagnosis, improvement in quality of life, and improvement in psychological well-being were seen through the use of psilocybin as an adjuvant treatment.”

The Illinois Hemp Business Association is urging lawmakers to reject proposed hemp products restrictions.

The Cato Institute published a post arguing that decriminalizing drug possession is a partial solution, and that broader legalization of supply is needed.
