The marijuana election results are in!

Michigan legalized marijuana.

North Dakota rejected a marijuana legalization measure.

Missouri voters approved medical cannabis.

Utah approved medical cannabis, too.

Ohio voters in five cities passed local marijuana decriminalization measures.

In Wisconsin, voters in a number of counties and cities approved nonbinding cannabis advisory questions.

In other ballot measure news, Colorado voters approved a proposal to change the definition of hemp, Florida voters approved an amendment to restore voting rights to people with felony convictions and Ohio voters rejected a proposal to defelonize drug possession.

A number of pro-legalization governors were elected. And Democrats took control of the House, which stand to give marijuana legislation a boost in 2019. Along similar lines, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), who has blocked every marijuana amendment proposed this Congress from reaching a floor vote, lost his reelection bid.

In huge non-U.S. news, a key Mexican senator who will be a member of the new presidential administration filed a bill to legalize marijuana production and sales. The move comes less than one week after the nation’s Supreme Court struck down the criminalization of cannabis.

/ FEDERAL

The U.S. attorney for the Western District of New York charged several people with attempting to bring marijuana legally purchased in Canada with them into the U.S.

/ STATES

Utah lawmakers released an updated version of compromise medical cannabis legislation expected to be voted on in a special session.

California regulators released a request for proposals to develop a public education campaign about the licensure of marijuana businesses.

/ INTERNATIONAL

Canada is pushing the World Anti-Doping Agency to remove marijuana from the list of substances banned in sports. Separately, a government memo found no “strong pull factors” for organized crime to invest in legal marijuana businesses.

Jersey’s Parliament voted to allow patients to get medical cannabis prescriptions from all general practitioners.

A Brazilian judge ruled that parents should be allowed to grow medical cannabis for their son.

The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States sent a press release urging people to invest in the cannabis industry in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

/ ADVOCACY

Disabled American Veterans is calling for “more research into medical cannabis as an alternative pain relief option for veterans with chronic pain, PTSD and TBIs.”

/ SCIENCE & HEALTH

An analysis of public discourse on cannabis found that “over time, news coverage shifted from negative to slightly positive toward marijuana use” and that “social media and advertisements were overwhelmingly favorable toward marijuana use and legalization by claiming social, romantic, and health benefits of marijuana use while completely downplaying risks.”

/ BUSINESS

Insys Therapeutics, which donated half a million dollars to help defeat marijuana legalization in Arizona in 2016, plans to sell off its opioid-related assets and instead become a cannabis-focused company.

Canadian news company Postmedia Network Inc. is investing in Prohbtd.

The National Association of Cannabis Businesses released advertising standards for the marijuana industry.
